OBJECTIVE:

Place American Express Card Members closer to the action than ever before, delivering an entertainment experience they would never forget.

STRATEGY:

Move people beyond passive virtual reality and get them up and swinging. Guests would be handed a responsive haptic “racquet,” and once they slipped on the VR headset would find themselves transported onto a professional USTA court, facing down Maria Sharapova. Inside the virtual world they could return her groundstrokes, lobs and even her famous serve.

RESULTS:

  • First-ever VR to blend live-action video, CGI, and the ability to fully move in a virtual world as you moved in the real world
  • More than 8,000 fans experienced You Versus during the two weeks of the U.S. Open
  • The supporting video garnered more than 19 million online views — the most of any video in American Express history
  • Bill Gates played You Versus and tweeted his experience to his 24 million followers
  • Project generated more than 1 billion earned media impressions
